Jury Selection Standards

Expertise alone is not enough—integrity also matters.

Alpha 8 should select jury members who can judge responsibly and protect the credibility of the competition.

Professional Experience

Jury members should demonstrate meaningful photographic, editorial, curatorial or visual-arts experience.

  • Recognized body of work
  • Relevant category knowledge
  • Ability to explain visual judgment

Independence and Integrity

Judges must follow the same written criteria and disclose relationships that could affect impartiality.

  • Conflict declarations
  • No private influence
  • Confidential judging process

Balanced Representation

The panel should combine different photographic strengths, perspectives and professional backgrounds.

  • Category diversity
  • Technical and artistic balance
  • National and future international representation
Judging Workflow

Every score should move through a controlled and auditable process.

The final system will record assignments, scores, conflicts and result approval.

1

Admin Approval

Entries are checked for eligibility, file quality and rule compliance.

2

Identity Hidden

Photographer names and membership levels are hidden from professional jurors.

3

Jury Assignment

Authorized jurors receive the correct competition and category entries.

4

Recorded Scoring

Each juror submits one recorded score per assigned image.

5

Result Verification

Authorized administrators verify finalists and winners before publication.

Scoring Framework

A transparent structure helps jurors evaluate consistently.

The percentages below are a draft framework and can be adjusted for each category before judging opens.

Category-Specific Criteria

Different categories need different emphasis. Wildlife authenticity, documentary ethics or creative manipulation rules may change the scoring details.

  • Criteria published before entry
  • Same framework for every entrant
  • Membership level never affects score
Conflict of Interest

A juror should never score an entry they cannot judge impartially.

The platform should allow jurors and administrators to flag conflicts before a score is recorded.

!

Personal Relationships

A juror should withdraw from an entry involving a close student, employee, business partner, family member or other significant relationship.

Prior Knowledge

If a juror recognizes an image or knows confidential information about its creation, the conflict should be declared.

Reassignment

Conflicted entries should be reassigned or handled using a documented alternative process.

Free and Pro photographers face the same jury standard.

Membership may change submission allowances, profile tools and statistics. It must never change the jury interface, scoring criteria, finalist selection or winner decision.
